Tulare Union High School: Tulare Academy of Marketing (TAM)

At Tulare Union, the Tulare Academy of Marketing (TAM) is up and running. Our first cohort of students is beginning the four-year transformation into exceptional business leaders prepared for higher education and marketing careers. During our first quarter, students learned about the four Ps of the marketing mix (product, price, place, and promotion). To demonstrate their understanding of this foundational concept, students worked with a partner to develop a marketing plan for a new V8 drink targeted to students and young adults. Their creativity really shined as they came up with a drink name, developed a logo, and created the artwork for their product. Next, they did a market analysis to determine how to competitively price their product, where they would sell it, and how to promote it. All of this culminated with a Google Slide presentation in front of their classmates. The top students in the class had the honor of presenting to business marketing professionals from our community.

The students in TAM are cohorted with the same 40 students in their English and math classes, where they are learning that subject with a marketing slant. In English, after reading a novel that is part of the freshman curriculum, students worked in groups to develop brochures about a fictional resort located in the town from their novel. They used their knowledge of the four Ps to develop a three-fold promotional brochure.

When asked about how the program is coming along, the marketing lead teacher, Mr. Schlick stated, “It has been so exciting to see the progress that the students are making. The quality of their first presentations was beyond my expectations. I can’t wait to see all that they accomplish and their skill level at the end of four years.”

Opportunity Education: Community School Coordinator

We are excited to announce that Marissa Nunes has joined our school community as the new Community School Coordinator! With her passion for fostering positive relationships between students, families, and the broader community, Marissa is eager to contribute to our school’s ongoing efforts to create a supportive, inclusive environment for all. Marissa is serving our four Opportunity Education Sites: Tech Prep, Sierra Vista, Countryside, and Accelerated Charter. At Tech Prep and Countryside, we kicked off the year with the creation of a Cares Closet. From there, both sites have hosted many events; those being, a Resource Fair, CSET Presentations, Food Drive, Winter Coat Drive, and pumpkin painting. At Accelerated Charter High School, we have had the opportunity to further add to our Cares Closet, which allowed us to open it up to families and students on the day that a big assembly was held. In addition, we have had a Thanksgiving Food Drive that allowed for baskets of Thanksgiving dinners for five families, lots of case management, and connection to CSET. Our Community School Coordinator is currently working alongside all staff and one of our partners to provide each and every student with a Christmas Stocking. At Sierra Vista, there has been lots of case management, Thanksgiving Food Drive, Winter Coat Drive, and an abundance of resources sent out virtually. Our students have had the opportunity to meet with our coordinator virtually and in person to access all of our resources, services, and donations. Our Opportunity Education Sites are delighted to welcome our new addition of our Community School Coordinator to our campuses, as we have seen large growth in services, resources, and accessibility for our students and families.
